Meditation vs Mindfulness

Have you ever wondered what the difference between meditation and mindfulness? Are they the same thing?

I was thinking about this the other day so thought I'd do some research and share as I'm sure someone else out there might have the same thought.

They are not the same thing AND there are two completely separate ways of applying to your daily life to receive their amazing benefits. These two practices are often used interchangeably so it’s understandable why they often get confused or misused.

Meditation is the formal practice of (usually) sitting and drawing your attention inward. Being completely still for anywhere from 1 to 60 minutes per day. The act of opening your heart, expansion of awareness or creating a state of calm within. Meditation often combines breath-work or mantra to help you quietly tune inward. With dedicated practice meditation becomes easier to do and the results on your mind and body are scientifically backed.

Mindfulness is about being fully present in what you are doing. Noticing the sounds, smells etc. Like being fully present when having a conversation with a loved one or whilst on a walk or simply brushing your teeth. When was the last time you thought about the action of brushing?

It could be learning to notice your physical and emotional reactions to life in general. Mindfulness is something you can do anywhere, anytime with anyone. As I mentioned in recent classes, moving from being mindless in our activities to being mind full.

So how would you apply these to your yoga practice?

I would encourage that you practice being mindful during the physical (asana) movement of yoga. This will create a deeper connection between mind and body. And, well, much safer in regards to avoiding injury as you are more aware of what the body needs in each moment.

Meditation is usually offered at the end of the physical practice. The idea is we burn off the excess energy via asana so we can then comfortably sit still during the meditation part.

So, there you go. I hope that gives you clearer understanding of the two practices so you can effortlessly apply them to your lives.  They both offer AMAZING benefits and I would highly recommend practicing both.

See you on the mat,

Tracy ❤️
