Resolution or Ritual?

Happy 2024!

I don't know about you but I have been inundated with 'new year, new you', 'become the best version of you' and 'resolutions that stick' emails. Blah!

I am amazed at the amount of attempted guilt trips that came through my inbox. I'm all for bringing in new year energy but not at the cost of my happiness or peace of mind.

Why do we have to become new versions of ourselves? Why can't we just upgrade on our already amazing selves!

Why do we have to be disciplined to create health? Discipline sounds intense and not so fun!

Essentially, we all know what we need to do to improve our personal wellness. We don't need anyone to remind us of our past mistakes. Instead I think we could spend some time realising what we value for ourselves. What we value we stick too and that brings us inner joy.

I value having a healthy body and mind: so I decided, this year, that I would flip the wording on its head. Words are so POWERFUL. Words are MAGIC.

So instead of being 'disciplined', I am now creating daily RITUALS for myself.

Cambridge Dictionary says a ritual is:

A way of doing something in which the same actions are done in the same way every time:

  • Coffee and the newspaper are part of my morning ritual.

So instead of the 'discipline' of my daily morning meditation, I'm saying its a ritual. Which to me sounds exciting. It has a warmness as I say the word. It has whispers of creation.

I have since set up my day full of rituals that are high value to me. Now they might look exactly like they did before: exercise, yoga or meditation but by changing the wording I now LOVE doing them. When I say to people, 'its my daily ritual to do....' they give me the time or space I need to do that ritual.

And the result? I have not missed a day since January 1st. Not one!

I encourage you to take a look at your own language and see what you can create for your physical and mental health in 2024.

Sending love and light,

Tracy xo
