Is comparison really the thief of joy?

Can comparison be the thief of joy? Your joy?

In a nutshell yes. As I move further along in my yoga/meditation journey I am learning to notice my thoughts. Observe physical and emotional responses to what I'm experiencing in and around my world.

And I have noticed a common theme of late that comes up for me.

I find I am comparing myself to other yoga practitioners and teachers. A result of too much scrolling i suspect.

Thoughts such as:

Why am I not as flexible or strong as such and such?

I eat so healthy, exercise etc. Why don't I look like them?

How come I get those numbers at my classes? What am I doing wrong?

And if I let it, this could easily be on repeat in my head. Its easy to negative self talk.

Lets be honest, most of us, from time to time, compare ourselves to others. But it's what we do with those thoughts that matters more.

By practicing observing your my thoughts, I can begin to catch the negative thought patterns. When these thoughts come up, I simply pause and remind myself that I AM extraordinarily unique. And that, if I AM extraordinarily unique then there is no point in comparing because there is no one else like me!

So yes, comparison IS the thief of joy.

You'll notice I highlighted the words I AM above. Negative thoughts are best rewired into I AM statements.

Here's mine:

I AM grateful I get to share yoga as a job.

I AM grateful for my happy, healthy body.

I AM grateful for the constant support of my clients.

Suddenly the negative, poor me self is rewiring to the positive.

I encourage you to watch the self talk and see what comes up for you. Then offer yourself some I AM statements to replace them as soon as you can.

See you on the mat,

Tracy
