HOW OFTEN SHOULD I DO MY YOGA PRACTICE?

This is a question I often get asked and it has the same answer to this question...how long is a piece of string? As long as you need it to be.

Put simply there is no right or wrong answer.

Personally, I think the best way to approach your yoga practice (or any new habit) is to first change the language. As soon as we hear the word ‘should’ we can become like a rebellious child resisting everything that is good for us!

You should eat your veges.

You should clean up your room.

You should exercise. Ick!

My suggestion is start with giving yourself permission to remove the should’s and have to’s when it comes to creating any new habit or routine. What about 'yay I get to do yoga today' instead?

From there its really down to personal choice with a dash of discipline.

Ask yourself: What can you realistically fit in your week?

What is a natural fit in your busy lifestyle?

For example: for you, it might be 15 minutes every Monday, online at home because a short session at home is all you have time and focus for. Or maybe its 2 full classes per week at your favourite studio because you have the time and love a live class.

Once you decide what is the right fit for you, write it down somewhere you'll see it. e.g diary or fridge or your reminders on your phone. And lets be honest, what you see value in you'll make time for.

Without going down the path of talking about creating new habits (that’s a whole other email) just begin with something that fits you. Yoga doesn’t have to be every day but you probably know from experience that yoga is a wonderful addition to your life that is worth making time for on a regular basis.

So from my perspective go easy on yourself and find what is simple for you to achieve but more importantly what you can stick to. Once that becomes routine or you begin to feel/see the results you will most likely want add in more (but you may not want to either).

Whatever your yoga practice looks like means its perfect because it works for you.

Big warm hugs,

Tracy
