Can adult tasks actually be fun?

Those three words were printed on the wall, in capital letters, at a gym I once worked at. I would look up, each day and read those words boldly sprawled across my view. Somehow, I began to think that that was the way to being in optimal shape and health. Like a drill sergeant, those words were yelling at me that my efforts weren’t enough and to be and do better.
On reflection, over 10 years later, I realise what those words were missing for me at that time in my life:…..FUN! And fun was exactly what was missing and I desperately needed when I had to do something I resisted. The way I’ve always perceived it was most of us resist what is often good for us because, well, it sucks doing it.
Snacks over veges….yup.
Couch over exercise…every time.
Scrolling socials over meditation…without question!
A typical mind is drawn to what is easy and habits are created from there. So, if you are reading this and nodding, let me reassure you that you are perfectly normal.
As a Personal Trainer (and highly qualified lazy person) I encourage you to find ways around the rules. Make them guidelines instead. I should know, I've made a career out of it.
You have been told you need to walk ?
Opt for a walking cuppa instead of sitting at the café. Make it a date with your partner or friend, grab your cup to go and move.
You need to lift weights for bone health?
Get a buddy. Choose a class over learning how to use the gym equipment. If training alone create a safe but fast and furious workout: mine are only 20 minutes, 3 times per week. That’s it. Whenever I don’t feel like it, I’m always thinking, well its only 20 mins of my day.
Have to eat healthier but hate cooking?
Try the pre-made health meals in the supermarket. Saves you time and you can eat more balanced meals. Who doesn’t love to outsource anyway.
Yes, we are grown up but not all grown up stuff is fun. Sometimes is downright hard BUT you can put a spin on it so it’s not such a chore. When its fun we move from ‘being’ accountable by dragging ourselves to task to finding fun ways to make that work for ourselves.
Where can you make some new guidelines for the less enjoyable adult tasks in your life?
Remember to put energy where you feel inspired. Create ways to do the things that make you happy. When you do, suddenly discipline, desire and dedication take on a whole new softer meaning. It will become words of encouragement to help you take care of you.
